Vittorio Gassman was an Italian actor, director, and writer. He was known as "Il Mattatore" (The Sir Laurence Olivier of Italy). He was born on 1 September 1922 in Genoa, Liguria, Italy. Gassman began his career in the theater, appearing in productions of plays by Luigi Pirandello, William Shakespeare, and Carlo Goldoni. He made his film debut in 1945 in the comedy Il Mattatore. He went on to appear in over 100 films, including the classic comedies Il Sorpasso (1962) and Il Boom (1963). He also starred in the drama La Grande Guerra (1959). Gassman won numerous awards for his work, including the David di Donatello for Best Actor in 1965 for his performance in Il Boom. He was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in the drama The Garden of the Finzi-Continis (1970). Gassman was married twice, first to actress Eleonora Brown and then to actress Stefania Sandrelli. He had two children, Alessandro and Jacopo. He died on 29 June 2000 in Rome, Italy.

Since 1946 he also worked at the movies and his first big role there was the criminal in Bitter Rice (1949). This fixed him to his main parts: The ambiguous gentleman inflicting pain and pleasure at the same time. He also participated in the Italian comedies and in American movies but the latter with only minor success.
Vittorio Gassman studied theatre in his youth and was quite a good basketball player. He debuted on stage in 1943 and soon felt home in all classical theatre works.
